Hand Surgery

.

Hand surgery is the field of medicine that includes the investigation, preservation, and restoration by medical, surgical, and rehabilitative means of all structures of the upper extremity directly affecting the form and function of the elbow, forearm, hand and wrist.  Board certified Hand Surgeons have received additional specialized training in the treatment of hand problems beyond their board certified specialty training in orthopaedic surgery, plastic surgery, or general surgery. To become a Board Certified Hand Surgeon, a full year of such additional training is usually required in most countries, as is the passage of a rigorous certifying examination.

.

Common problems treated in Hand surgery include carpal tunnel syndrome; upper limb pain; sports injuries; fractures of the hand, wrist, and forearm; trigger fingers; wrist pain; or  tennis elbow. Other problems treated can include arthritis, Dupuytren disease, nerve and tendon injuries, and congenital limb differences (birth defects).  Not all problems treated by a Hand Specialist need surgery. They often recommend non-surgical treatments, such as medication, splints, therapy, or injections.

Ultra MIS Surgery

.

Dr. Jose Manuel Rojo Manaute developed and pioneered several techniques in Ultra Minimally Invasive Surgery (1 mm incisions) for Hand Surgery. As a dedicated innovator in his field he has developed techniques that continue to improve patient quality of life. His dedication to research culminated in 2000 in a Doctoral Thesis (Ph.D.) awarded with the highest grade and the highest possible award in his country (the Spanish “Extraordinary Award” to a Doctoral Thesis). From 2008 to 2014, he directed a young motivated team of researchers at the Spanish Unit of Research of Hand Surgery (Hospital Gregorio Marañon, Madrid). His efforts in this team led to the pioneer description of an innovative form of procedures: Ultra Minimally Invasive Surgery (Ultra MIS). The term was defined in 2008 and published for the first time in 2013. This term refers to those procedures performed thru a 1 millimeter skin incision. His efforts leading his team have been three times awarded by the American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons and by several Spanish institutions. Dr. Rojo-Manaute has communicated the results of his research in over one hundred publications, books and medical conventions. He enjoyed being an associate clinical professor for the University Hospital Gregorio Marañon (Madrid, Spain), teaching conventional and Ultra Minimally Invasive procedures in Hand Surgery for six years to Medical students and Residents as they rotated through Orthopedics.  Dr. Rojo-Manaute was proud to serve as the Scientific Chairman for the 1st international Ultra MIS Symposium (2013), the 3rd Medcare Orthopaedics and Spine Hospital Symposium (2015) and for Dubai´s IAOC 2016th symposyum. His commitment to raising the standard of care in his field has allowed him, through his innovations, to elevate the quality of life of patients with a debilitating hand disease.
